Sophie and the role of Principal

Sophie Tukukino is Tumuaki of Te Kura Māori o Porirua in the rohe of Ngāti Toarangitira.  Drawing on her extensive experience as a leader, she offers some valuable advice for those thinking of taking up the role of principal. Sophie’s iwi affiliations include Ngāti Tamaterā, Rongomaiwahine and Ngāti Kahungunu.

In this video, Sophie talks about the importance of knowing your why. Why are you in your role? Why do you want to be a leader?

Staying connected with your ākonga and with your new kaiako can support you in remembering your why and also keep your finger on what is required. Sophie insists on teaching a class, which helps to keep the reason she started in the industry at the forefront of her mind.

Although it is not easy, separating your work life and whānau life is integral in keeping well as a tumuaki.

Sharing the responsibility of leadership with your team, enables the opportunity to grow the leadership qualities of others which Sophie strives to do.

As Māori and as educators, we have a cultural and professional responsibility to do our very best for our greatest treasures, our tamariki.
